How Long Does It Take to Visit Versailles
We all crave a break from the stresses of normal life every so often, and it's at these times a trip to the great British seaside sounds heavenly.
So we need a seaside location - you might think Devon or Cornwall is the place to escape to, but don't forget we're an island, surrounded by sea, so don't forget the North!
To see what the northern most county might offer I made a trip to Northumberland for a long weekend, and it didn't disappoint: breathtaking scenery, glorious beaches and a beautiful cottage to snuggle down and recharge the batteries in. We stayed in Limeworks Cottage, part of Crabtree & Crabtree which provide a great selection of holiday homes across the Scottish Borders and Northumberland. This cottage was nestled between villages in an idyllic rural location, a lovely, comfortable home and great base to explore the area. The house has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and is equipped with everything you might need. Lighting the fire at the end of the day and hunkering down in the cosy sitting room after enjoying a meal cooked in the aga was just bliss.
That's not to say there's no reason to leave the house, though. Visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne (famed for its oysters), which is cut off from the rest of the world twice a day by the tide. Make sure you check the tide times before you cross the causeway to the island as it is sometimes submerged under the sea! As the original burial place of St Cuthbert, this is still a place of pilgrimage today, the picturesque village steeped in history, with the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory standing tall overlooking the sea.
History is everywhere here, with Bamburgh Castle, Dustanburgh Castle and Alnwick Castle just a few of the 70+ castle sites in the county (the most in any county in England). We visited Bamburgh Castle on a grey and miserable March day, but once you step inside the grounds you're transported to another world, the castle standing proud on the cliffs edge, with fantastic views. One of the only privately owned castles still standing, it's well worth a visit, or why not rent one of its apartments and live like a King!
In the pretty market town of Alnwick there's lots to see and do: explore the castle (which closes for the winter), wander round The Alnwick Garden, calling at it's Treehouse Restaurant (literally built into the trees!) for a bite to eat. Reading goes hand in hand with a relaxing holiday, and its well worth browsing the fantastic selection at Barter Books, a unique bookshop set within a converted railway station. Take a break from perusing the shelves with a hot drink and a sweet treat, sat in front of one of the open fires.
And of course, with so many beautiful beaches, miles of wild moorland and many historic sites on your doorstep, in this county you'll be spoilt for choice!
Crabtree & Crabtree (01573 226711, crabtreeandcrabtree.com) Limeworks Cottage costs from £72 per person for a 3-night short break stay (£427.50 for the property) and £95 per person per week (£570 for the property per week) on a self-catered basis.
